How we calculate this

This follows guidelines agreed by the American Animal Hospital Association, the American Association of Feline Practitioners and International Cat Care: about 15 human years for the first year, 24 by the second birthday, then about 4 for every year after.

For kittens under one, we work it out proportionally, so a six-month-old kitten comes out at around seven or eight.

Under 1: 15 × age1 to 2: 15 + 9 × (age − 1)Over 2: 24 + 4 × (age − 2)

Questions people ask

How old is my cat in human years?

Roughly 15 at one year old and 24 at two, then add 4 for each year after. So a 10-year-old cat is about 56.

Is one cat year seven human years?

No. Cats mature very quickly in their first two years, then age more steadily. The seven-year rule underestimates young cats and overestimates older ones.

How long do cats live?

Many cats live into their teens, and some reach 20 or more. Regular vet checks become more important as your cat gets older.
