EV charging time calculator
A 7 kW home wallbox adds roughly 6 kWh of charge an hour, so a 60 kWh battery takes about 9 hrs 26 mins from empty.

Estimates. Cold batteries, a busy charger or a car that limits its own speed can make charging slower.
Charging times for a 60 kWh battery
From 20% to 80%, with 10% lost as heat.
| Charger | 20% to 80% | Empty to full |
|---|---|---|
| 3-pin plug (2.3 kW) | 17 hrs 13 mins | 28 hrs 42 mins |
| Home wallbox (7 kW) | 5 hrs 39 mins | 9 hrs 26 mins |
| Three-phase wallbox (11 kW) | 3 hrs 36 mins | 6 hrs |
| Public fast (22 kW) | 1 hr 48 mins | 3 hrs |
| Public rapid (50 kW) | 48 mins | 1 hr 35 mins |
| Ultra-rapid (150 kW) | 16 mins | 32 mins |
How we calculate this
We divide the charge you need by the charging speed, which is the lower of the charger’s power and your car’s maximum. We add 10% for energy lost as heat while charging.
On rapid chargers, cars charge fastest between about 10% and 80%, then slow right down. We count anything above 80% at half speed. Home and 3-pin charging stays steady almost to full.
Questions people ask
How long does it take to charge an electric car at home?
On a 7 kW wallbox, a typical 60 kWh battery takes around 8 to 10 hours from empty, so an overnight charge usually fills it. Topping up from 20% to 80% takes about 5 hours.
Can I charge from a normal plug?
Yes, but it is slow: a 3-pin plug gives about 2.3 kW, adding roughly 6 to 8 miles of range an hour. It suits occasional use or small batteries.
Why does charging slow down after 80%?
Cars reduce the charging speed as the battery fills, to protect it. On a rapid charger, going from 80% to 100% can take almost as long as 10% to 80%.
