How we calculate this

For cars registered on or after 1 April 2017, the first payment depends on CO2. After that, every car pays the standard rate of £200. Cars with a list price over £40,000 (or £50,000 for electric cars registered from 1 April 2025) also pay £440 a year for 5 years, from the second time the car is taxed.

For cars registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017, the yearly rate depends only on the CO2 band.

Monthly Direct Debit payments add 5% to the 12-month rate.

From April 2017, years 2 to 6: £200 + £440 if list price is over the limitFrom April 2017, year 7 on: £2002001 to 2017: rate for your CO2 band

Questions people ask

Do electric cars pay car tax?

Yes, since April 2025. New electric cars pay £10 for the first year, then the standard rate of £200. Electric cars registered between 2001 and March 2017 pay the band A rate of £20.

What is the expensive car supplement?

An extra £440 a year for 5 years on cars registered from April 2017 with a list price over £40,000, or £50,000 for electric cars registered from 1 April 2025. It uses the list price when new, including options, even if you bought the car used.

Where do I find my car’s CO2 emissions?

On the V5C log book, next to “CO2 (g/km)”. You can also check a car’s tax and CO2 on GOV.UK using the number plate.

When do car tax rates change?

Usually every 1 April. We update this calculator when the new rates are published.
