Ways to spend less

  • Induction heats the pan directly, so less heat is wasted than on ceramic or gas hobs.
  • Match the pan to the ring size and use a lid to boil water faster.
  • Boost or power settings run at full power, so use them only to bring things to the boil.

How we calculate this

We take a typical induction hob ring at 1,500 watts (an average, as it switches on and off while running), used 30 minutes a day, 6 days a week, and multiply the energy it uses by the Ofgem price cap unit rate of 26.32p per kWh.

One 30 minutes on one ring uses about 0.75 kWh. Use the calculator above with your own appliance’s power and how you use it for a closer figure.

Questions people ask

How much does an induction hob ring cost to run a year?

With typical use (30 minutes a day, 6 days a week), about £61.76 a year at the current price cap, or £5.15 a month.

Is induction cheaper than gas?

Induction wastes less heat, but electricity costs about three times as much per kWh as gas. For most homes the running cost is similar, and induction is quicker.

Does an induction hob need special pans?

Yes, they need to be magnetic. If a fridge magnet sticks to the base, it will work.

Does this include the standing charge?

No. The standing charge (54.83p a day under the current cap, about £200.13 a year) is a fixed daily cost for being connected. It does not change with how much you use any appliance.
