Ways to spend less

  • Cook several dishes at once. A full oven costs about the same to run as an empty one.
  • Keep the door shut. Each time you open it, heat escapes and the oven has to reheat.
  • Fan ovens can usually cook about 20°C lower than conventional settings, which saves energy.

How we calculate this

We take a typical electric oven at 2,000 watts (an average, as it switches on and off while running), used 1 hour a day, 4 days a week, and multiply the energy it uses by the Ofgem price cap unit rate of 26.32p per kWh.

One hour of cooking uses about 2 kWh. Use the calculator above with your own appliance’s power and how you use it for a closer figure.

kWh per day = (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours per dayCost per day = kWh per day × unit rateCost per year = cost per day × days per week × 52.14

Questions people ask

How much does an electric oven cost to run a year?

With typical use (1 hour a day, 4 days a week), about £109.79 a year at the current price cap, or £9.15 a month.

How much does it cost to run an oven for an hour?

About 2 kWh for a typical electric oven over an hour, once you allow for it switching on and off to hold the temperature. Smaller, efficient fan ovens use less.

Does preheating use a lot of energy?

Preheating is when an oven works hardest, running at full power until it reaches temperature. For many dishes you can put food in as it heats up and add a few minutes.

Does this include the standing charge?

No. The standing charge (54.83p a day under the current cap, about £200.13 a year) is a fixed daily cost for being connected. It does not change with how much you use any appliance.
